The Unique Challenge of Geographically Dispersed Communities
Many of the most active community organizations in East Africa serve members who are spread across multiple countries - Kenyan diaspora associations in the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, and the Gulf; clan welfare organizations with members in five different counties and abroad; cultural preservation groups with chapters in Nairobi, Mombasa, and overseas.
These organizations face a coordination challenge that is fundamentally different from locally based groups. Time zones differ. Currency preferences vary. Meeting attendance is impossible in person for many members. And yet the sense of community and the need for organized collective action is as strong as ever.
