The Vital Role of Women's Groups in East Africa
Women's groups are one of the most dynamic and economically significant institutions in East Africa. From small neighbourhood merry-go-rounds rotating a few thousand shillings each month, to large women's welfare organizations managing land purchases and investment portfolios worth millions, these groups represent an extraordinary mobilization of collective resources and social trust.
Yet the administrative infrastructure supporting most women's groups remains far below the level of sophistication the organizations themselves have achieved. The treasurer's notebook, the secretary's personal phone, and the WhatsApp group are doing the heavy lifting for groups that deserve better.
