The Cooperative Model in East Africa
The cooperative movement in East Africa is one of the region's most powerful development tools. From dairy cooperatives in Kiambu and Meru to fishing cooperatives on Lake Victoria, from housing cooperatives in Kampala to savings cooperatives in Kigali - the cooperative model has demonstrated its capacity to aggregate small individual resources into significant collective economic power.
But cooperative governance is complex. Members hold shares. Dividends must be calculated. Loans may be offered. Regulatory compliance is required. And all of this administration must be transparent to members who have a legal ownership stake in the organization.
